Mackenzie To Serve on Four House Committees

January 11, 2021

HARRISBURG – Rep. Milou Mackenzie (R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton) announced today that she will serve on the House Children and Youth, Education, Human Services and Urban Affairs committees for the 2021-22 Legislative Session.

“I am pleased and excited to serve on these four House committees,” said Mackenzie. “I have a vast amount of experience and knowledge to offer and look forward to applying that knowledge to help pass purposeful legislation that will improve the lives of our children, our education systems and our communities.”

The House Children and Youth Committee studies adoption and child protection issues, along with child day care services, infant/child/mother health issues, juvenile delinquency, and adolescent and teen problems. It played an integral role in previous sessions to update the state’s child protection laws and continues to monitor those laws to make any necessary updates.

The House Education Committee works on state issues involving public and private schools, encompassing pre-K through grade 12 basic education, as well as post-secondary education.

The House Human Services Committee has oversight of issues within the Department of Human Services and the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Among the issues it has dealt with included legislation to address the heroin and opioid overdose crisis by trying to prevent these powerful drugs from getting into the wrong hands. The committee will continue to convene hearings regarding the delivery of human services throughout the Commonwealth and the challenges faced by individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, along with those needing mental health services and drug and alcohol treatment.

The House Urban Affairs Committee reviews legislation affecting the state’s largest cities including housing; urban redevelopment; economic development; land use planning and zoning; growth management; infrastructure financing; and city services such as police, fire, sewage and water.
