HARRISBURG –Rep. Milou Mackenzie (R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton) today applauded an investment to protect a Montgomery County farm in the 131st Legislative District. The New Goshenhoppen United Church of Christ Farm #2 is a 20-acre crop and beef farm in Upper Hanover Township.
“I am very grateful for this investment as it’s crucial we protect our farmland and agriculture, which is the leading industry in our Commonwealth,” Mackenzie said. “I know this investment will succeed and continue to bless the citizens of Montgomery County far into the future.”
The farm preservation program allows landowners to sell their land's development rights, to preserve their farms, and protect land from future residential, commercial or industrial development. Farm families often sell their land at below market value to ensure that it will remain farmland forever. Pennsylvania partners with county and sometimes local governments and nonprofits to purchase development rights, ensuring a strong future for farming and food security.
Montgomery is one of 32 counties with newly preserved farmland. Pennsylvania continues to lead the nation in the number of preserved farms with 6,076, investing more than $1.6 billion since 1988 to protect the state’s valuable farmland.
