Mackenzie Applauds Funding to Preserve Lehigh County Farm
December 21, 2022
LEHIGH COUNTY – Rep. Milou Mackenzie (R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton) today applauded an investment to protect a Lehigh County farm in the 131st Legislative District. The Patricia A. Husted Farm in Upper Saucon Township is a 31-acre horse farm.
“As agriculture remains the leading industry in our Commonwealth, it is critical we preserve our precious farmland,” said Mackenzie. “I know this investment is for the betterment of all the citizens of Lehigh County, and furthermore the total funding will help to protect agriculture across all of Pennsylvania.”
The farm preservation program allows landowners to sell their land's development rights to preserve their farms and protect the land from future residential, commercial or industrial development. Farm families often sell their land at below market value to ensure it will remain farmland forever. Pennsylvania partners with county and sometimes local governments and nonprofits to purchase development rights, ensuring a strong future for farming and food security.
Pennsylvania preserved 2,478 acres on 30 farms in 18 counties, including Lehigh County, while investing more than $8.9 million in state, county, local and nonprofit dollars in the protection of farmland. Our commonwealth ends 2022 continuing to lead our country, having protected 170 farms and 13,069 acres this year.
