NORTHAMPTON COUNTY -- In a letter addressed to Gov. Josh Shapiro and Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt, Rep. Milou Mackenzie (R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton) expressed deep concerns regarding voting machine failures during the municipal elections on Nov. 7 in Northampton County.

The primary issue highlighted was the lack of proper testing of the ES&S ExpressVote XL voting machines ahead of election day. Voters reported that when selecting "yes" or "no” at the polls, the printout provided by the machine inaccurately switched their vote.

“As a state representative and longtime voter in Northampton County, I was deeply concerned to learn about the failures experienced by fellow voters during the municipal elections on Nov. 7,” said Mackenzie. “It is of the utmost importance to note that this is the second time that Northampton County has encountered issues with the machines that they utilize, ES&S ExpressVote XL, which were first purchased by the county ahead of the municipal elections in 2019.”

Mackenzie emphasized that this is a non-partisan issue and the need to restore confidence in the electoral system affects all voters, including Republicans, Democrats, Independents and other parties alike. She announced her intention to introduce legislation aimed at improving communication between the Commonwealth and counties during the electoral process. She concluded her letter by expressing hope for a collaborative discussion with Shapiro, Schmidt, and relevant agencies to prevent widespread failures in the future.
